Working With Our Firm

1

Initial Consultation

We begin with a complimentary 15-minute consultation to understand your situation, identify the legal issues involved, and determine whether we are the right fit for your matter.

2

Assessment & Strategy

We review your documents and circumstances, explain your options in plain language, and outline a realistic assessment of the strengths, risks, and likely timeline of your matter.

3

Retainer & Fee Agreement

Before any work begins, you receive a written retainer agreement setting out the scope of representation and how fees are charged — so there are no surprises.

4

Negotiation & Resolution

Most matters resolve without a trial. We pursue settlement, mediation, or negotiated agreements wherever they serve your interests and reduce cost and delay.

5

Court Proceedings

Where resolution is not possible, we prepare and advance your matter through the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, keeping you informed at every step.

6

Conclusion & Next Steps

Once your matter concludes, we ensure orders or agreements are properly documented and advise on enforcement or any remaining obligations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer a free consultation?
Yes. We offer a complimentary 15-minute consultation so you can describe your situation and get an initial sense of your options. You can book directly through our online calendar.
What areas of law does the firm handle?
Our practice covers five main areas: family law (prenuptial, cohabitation, and separation agreements, parenting, support, and property division); real estate (residential and commercial transactions, refinancing, and closings); civil litigation (contractual, shareholder, and property disputes, and mortgage enforcement); corporate and business law (purchase and sale of a business, shareholder agreements, and commercial contracts); and wills and estates (wills, powers of attorney, probate applications, and estate administration).
Are services available in Chinese?
Yes. Services are available in English, Mandarin, and Shanghainese, and Cantonese-speaking clients can be assisted through our office. You can discuss your matter in the language you are most comfortable with and avoid misunderstandings on important legal details.
How are legal fees charged?
Fee arrangements depend on the type and complexity of the matter. Some work is billed hourly, while certain transactional matters may be handled on a flat-fee basis. You will always receive a written retainer agreement explaining the fee structure before work begins.
Is there a deadline for starting a legal claim in Ontario?
Generally, yes. Under Ontario's Limitations Act, 2002, most civil claims must be started within two years of the date the claim was discovered, and there is an ultimate limitation period of fifteen years. Certain matters are subject to different rules. Because missing a limitation period can permanently bar a claim, you should seek advice as early as possible.
How long will my matter take?
Timelines vary considerably. A straightforward negotiated agreement may be completed within weeks, while a contested court proceeding can take a year or more. We provide a realistic estimate for your specific circumstances during the consultation.
Are the online calculators on this site accurate?
The calculators provide general estimates for informational purposes only. They do not account for every factor a court may consider, and they are not a substitute for legal advice. Results should not be relied upon for negotiation or decision-making without speaking to a lawyer.
